Performing Adult CPR: Steps and Techniques
Administering CPR is crucial for saving lives in emergency situations. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to perform adult CPR effectively.
Step 1: Assess Responsiveness and Contact Emergency Services
Check the patient for responsiveness by gently shaking their shoulders and asking if they are okay. If unresponsive, call emergency services immediately.
Step 2: Check for Breathing
Check the patient's breathing for up to 10 seconds. If they are not breathing, begin CPR immediately.
Step 3: Perform Chest Compressions
Perform 30 chest compressions at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute, pressing down 5 to 6 cm deep in the centre of the chest. Ensure compressions are equal in speed on the push and the release, maintaining regular intervals.
Step 4: Administer Rescue Breaths
After completing the 30 compressions, provide two rescue breaths. Minimize the time between compressions and breaths, taking only a 5-10 second break.
Performing Rescue Breaths
- Open the airway using the head-tilt-chin-lift technique.
- Pinch the soft part of the nose and seal your mouth around the victim's mouth.
- Blow gently for about one second or until you see the chest rise.
Step 5: Repeat the CPR Cycle
Continue alternating between 30 compressions and two rescue breaths until an AED or emergency services arrive. Remember, it is vital to keep oxygen-rich blood pumping around the body.
